How Purpose Drives Growth in Manufacturing

  • August 21, 2025

Manufacturing isn’t just about parts, processes, and production. It’s about people. Why they show up, what keeps them motivated, and what connects them to the vision.

Simon Sinek’s Start with Why suggests that truly great leaders and companies don’t just explain what they do or how they do it. They begin with why they do it. This is the deeper purpose that inspires the right behaviors and decisions. This lesson is crucial for any manufacturers whether they are navigating growth, talent challenges, or even ownership transitions.

The Golden Circle in Manufacturing

Most companies can tell you what they make.
The good ones can explain how they make it.
But the exceptional ones lead with why.

The Golden Circle is Sinek’s concentric framework that addresses why, how, and what with why being at the center as a driving force for businesses.

Here is how we apply Sinek’s Golden Circle:

Our Why:

It’s time to reinvent the manufacturing industry.

For too long, this industry has been marked by outdated practices and a disregard for the people who make it run. It doesn’t have to be this way. We believe that this industry can be the platform for building something great. For making a significant, positive impact on the world.

For us, manufacturing isn’t just about building products. It’s about building better lives. For our employees, this means opportunity, respect, and growth. For the world, it means proving that manufacturing can, and should, be a force for good.

We’re here to show that people make the difference, that how we work and treat each other matters, and that by relentlessly pursuing “better,” we can inspire others to see this industry—and themselves—in a new light.

We’re building something bigger than ourselves. Better than what exists today. A manufacturing environment in which we create a ripple effect of lasting positive impact, though not just our products, but our people.

It’s a lofty goal, but a worthy one—we’re raising the bar in the manufacturing industry. Reinventing an industry with antiquated practices into one you can count on for growth, fulfillment, and impact. This is no easy pursuit, and one that requires hard work, but is unquestionably worth fighting for.

In summary, our why is the reason for our vision which is to enable an exceptional team to create significant and enduring value for the organization itself, and our people’s lives, through the relentless pursuit of better. Our actions will reinvent what’s possible in our industry, inspiring others to follow our lead.

Our How:

Our values—hungry, humble, smart—and leader traits represent the unique way we are enabling our vision to come to life.

Hungry:
Hungry to learn. Hungry to challenge the status quo. Hungry for results. Hungry to make an impact.

Humble:
Lacks ego. Puts others first. Adopts a rookie mindset. Is coachable.

Smart:
Skilled & capable with people. Skilled & capable at their job.

Leader Traits:

  • Care about people
  • Think like an owner
  • Continuously learn & grow
  • Drive for results
  • Passion for impact
  • Lead with intention

Our What:

Putting together our vision and strategy collectively represent what we believe and pursue together. We depict our strategy in the form of a flywheel. It represents what we must do to enable our vision, which is represented here at the heart of our flywheel.

Vision:

We will enable an exceptional team to create significant and enduring value for the organization itself, and our people’s lives, through the relentless pursuit of better. Our actions will reinvent what’s possible in our industry, inspiring others to follow our lead.

Strategy:

  • Attract and develop the best people.
  • Challenge and empower our people to grow and use their capabilities to create competitive advantage.
  • Continuously improve, create, and intentionally grow capital-light business(es) in niche markets.
  • Fuel the resource engine to earn the right to create significant, enduring value.
  • Provide opportunities to create extraordinary potential and possibilities for people through investments in existing or new entities/regions.

Why Purpose Matters In Manufacturing

Manufacturing is full of complexity. Tight deadlines, demanding customers, competition, market forces. It’s easy for a company to get caught up in outputs and KPIs. But purpose is the anchor that brings clarity in complex situations. When employees connect to the why, they see their work as more than just a job. They see it as a mission that gives them purpose. Because of this, they’re more likely to endure challenges, innovate, and stay committed far beyond any financial incentive.

That’s why it’s important to us to work with people who crave the why.

As Sinek reminds us:

“The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have, the goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe.”

Putting It Into Practice

  • Start meetings by reconnecting to purpose.
  • Repeat your purpose in conversations and make it visible.
  • Use why as a filter for decisions. Does it support your purpose?

Manufacturing is full of what and how. But companies that start with why inspire deeper loyalty, better results, and more meaningful impact.

Reflection Questions:

As you think about your own work or company, ask yourself:

Individuals: What is the purpose of my work? Is this clear to me?

Leaders: If someone were to ask my team, “why do you do what you do” would they all answer the same way? How am I intentionally connecting my team to a shared purpose?

At PJWS, we believe learning doesn’t stop in the classroom or even on the job. Many of our leaders and team members grow through reading, and the ideas we’ve gathered from authors over the years have shaped how we think, lead, and build our business. That’s why we’re launching a new series: Books for Building Better

Each post will explore a book that’s helped us improve—from leadership and engineering to culture and strategy—and the ways we apply those lessons. Have a book that’s inspired you? Share it with us at: wallbank@pjws.com

Concepts and selected quotes adapted from Start With Why by Simon Sinek, are used under fair use for commentary and educational purposes.
